LNB Cabling and Weatherproofing the F-Connector
The F-connector where the cable meets the LNB is the weak point of every outdoor satellite installation. Get it wrong and water creeps in, the picture fails in the rain, and you climb back up the ladder within a year. Get it right and you will never think about it again.
Making a Good F-Connector
- Trim the outer sheath back about 15 mm, taking care not to cut the braid.
- Fold the braid back over the outside of the cable.
- Trim the foil carefully, leaving the centre foam dielectric exposed.
- Screw the F-connector onto the cable until the foam is just visible at the top.
- Trim the centre copper pin to about 7 mm protruding.
The Number One Mistake
Braid touching the centre pin. It causes a short, and the receiver's LNB supply cuts out — often with a “short circuit” warning. Inspect carefully after fitting.
Weatherproofing: Self-Amalgamating Tape
Ordinary electrical tape does not last outdoors. Use self-amalgamating (self-fusing) silicone rubber tape:
- Stretch it to about half its normal width as you wrap.
- Start a few centimetres up the cable, wind over the connector, and finish a centimetre past the LNB body.
- Overlap each turn by half.
- It bonds into a single watertight rubber sleeve in a few minutes.
Add a UV Outer Layer
Sunlight degrades the self-amalgamating tape over years. Add a layer of ordinary black PVC tape on top for UV protection. The black outer layer does the UV blocking; the inner silicone does the sealing.
Cable Drop Loop
Where the cable leaves the LNB, make a small downward loop before it clips away. This forces any water travelling down the cable to drip off before it reaches the connector.
Check It Every Couple of Years
Every time you are on the ladder, squeeze the taped connector. If it feels hard and bonded, fine. If it is cracked or peeling, redo it.
Why This Matters More Than the LNB Brand
Two identically priced LNBs — one badly taped, one properly taped — will have wildly different lifetimes. The tape, not the electronics, is what keeps water out.
Spend two minutes on the outdoor connector. It is the best two minutes in the whole installation.
