MediaPortal aims to be a complete home theater replacement. It includes TV, movies, music, pictures, and web portals in one interface. DVBViewer focuses on broadcast reception and recording with minimal distraction from other media types.
Tuner and broadcast support
DVBViewer handles a wide range of DVB standards including DVB-S, DVB-S2, DVB-T, and DVB-C through the standard BDA driver framework. MediaPortal extends this with plugin support for additional hardware and network tuner backends.
Recording quality
Both applications record transport stream files without transcoding by default. DVBViewer offers more granular control over recording formats and pre/post-recording actions. MediaPortal simplifies the process at the cost of some advanced options.
Configuration complexity
MediaPortal requires more initial setup, especially when configuring the TV server and client on separate machines. DVBViewer can be running within minutes of installation on a single PC.
System resources
DVBViewer is lighter and runs better on older hardware. MediaPortal demands more RAM and CPU, particularly when running additional plugins or serving content to multiple clients.
