Watching satellite TV on the road is one of the great joys of motorhome life — but aligning a dish every lunchtime is not. RV satellite installations balance portability, ease of alignment and robustness. Here is how to do it right.<\/p>\n

Three Types of RV Satellite Setup<\/h2>\n

1. Portable \/ fold-out dish<\/h3>\n

A small 30–45 cm dish on a tripod that you set up on the ground outside the van. Cheap, but you align it by hand at every stop.<\/p>\n

2. Manual roof-mounted dish<\/h3>\n

A fixed dish on the roof that you crank and align using a meter. Cheaper than automatic, but still needs setup at each site.<\/p>\n

3. Automatic \/ “self-seek” dome<\/h3>\n

A sealed dome on the roof that finds the satellite at the press of a button. The most convenient and the most expensive.<\/p>\n

Cable and Power Considerations<\/h2>\n

Run the coax from the roof through a proper waterproof gland, not through a window. Power the LNB from the receiver (most do this by default). If you have an automatic dome, plan a 12 V power feed to the roof as well.<\/p>\n

Aligning a Portable Dish on Site<\/h2>\n

Use a smartphone satellite-pointer app. Tripod the dish, point it roughly, then use the receiver's signal meter to peak. A small portable dish works best at a clear, open site — on a crowded Aires with trees all around, even a dome will struggle.<\/p>\n

Wind and Vibration<\/h2>\n

On the move, the dish sees enormous vibration. Either stow it securely or use a sealed dome. Never drive with a manual dish unlocked — a 40 cm dish acting as an air brake will tear the bracket off.<\/p>\n

What Size Dish for the Road?<\/h2>\n

A 45 cm portable dish is fine in central footprint areas. If you travel to the edge of coverage, or wild-camp under trees, consider a 60 cm fold-up. Larger dishes get tiring to set up twice a day.<\/p>\n
