Every satellite dish ends in a small plastic box on the feed arm. That box — the LNB — is where physics meets your television. Understanding how it works makes every other satellite problem easier to diagnose.<\/p>\n

From Microwaves to L-Band<\/h2>\n

A geostationary satellite broadcasts at around 10.7–12.75 GHz (Ku band). That is far too high for ordinary coaxial cable to carry over long distances without huge loss. The LNB's job is to translate that high frequency down to the L-band (around 950–2150 MHz), which coax handles comfortably.<\/p>\n

The Inside of an LNB<\/h2>\n

  1. Feed horn:<\/strong> collects the focused signal from the dish.<\/li>\n
  2. Waveguide probe:<\/strong> picks up either horizontal or vertical polarity.<\/li>\n
  3. Low-noise amplifier (LNA):<\/strong> boosts the tiny signal without adding much noise of its own.<\/li>\n
  4. Local oscillator and mixer:<\/strong> subtracts the LO frequency (typically 9.75 \/ 10.60 GHz) to produce the L-band.<\/li>\n
  5. Output stage:<\/strong> drives the coaxial cable to the receiver.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    How the Receiver Selects Polarisation and Band<\/h2>\n

    The receiver does not send data to the LNB — it just changes the DC voltage and tone on the cable:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • 13 V<\/strong> = vertical polarity.<\/li>\n
    • 18 V<\/strong> = horizontal polarity.<\/li>\n
    • No 22 kHz tone<\/strong> = low band.<\/li>\n
    • 22 kHz tone<\/strong> = high band.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Four combinations — V\/L, V\/H, H\/L, H\/H — give four separate sub-bands, each carrying many transponders.<\/p>\n

      Why “Low Noise” Matters<\/h2>\n

      The signal arriving at the dish is vanishingly weak. The first amplifier in the chain sets the noise floor for the whole system. A noisy LNB adds snow that no amount of dish size can remove. This is why the noise figure (0.1 dB, 0.2 dB, 0.3 dB) matters.<\/p>\n

      Why Universal LNBs Have Two Oscillators<\/h2>\n

      A “universal” LNB uses two local oscillators — 9.75 GHz for the low band and 10.60 GHz for the high band — switching between them with the 22 kHz tone. This is what lets one LNB cover the entire Ku extended band.<\/p>\n

      Why LNBs Are the Most Failure-Prone Part<\/h2>\n

      The LNB is the only powered component outdoors, it lives in a sealed box that heats and cools, and water always finds a way in. Everything else on a dish is passive metal — the LNB is the computer on your roof.<\/p>\n
