QPSK (Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) uses four phase positions. It sends 2 bits per symbol. It is robust — it works even on a weak, noisy signal. Used for SD and many DVB-S services.<\/p>\n
8PSK uses eight phase positions, sending 3 bits per symbol. That is 50% more data on the same transponder. But it needs a cleaner signal — more likely to pixelate in rain. Used for HD in DVB-S2.<\/p>\n
DVB-S2X goes further, using 16 and 32 positions. These send even more bits per symbol but need a near-perfect signal. This is what 4K channels use.<\/p>\n
Every broadcaster chooses a balance: robust but lower bitrate (QPSK) reaches viewers at the edge of the footprint; higher bitrate but needs clean signal (8PSK\/APSK) gives a better picture but needs more rain margin.<\/p>\n
If your signal margin is thin, higher-modulation channels (HD, 4K) will drop out first, while lower-modulation SD channels keep working. That is why some channels pixelate in rain and others do not.<\/p>\n
