Your receiver picks the transponder, demultiplexes it, and shows you the individual channel you selected. That is why changing channel on the same transponder is near-instant, while moving to a new transponder takes a second.<\/p>\n<h2>Transponder Parameters<\/h2>\n<p>Each transponder has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A downlink frequency (e.g. 11836 MHz).<\/li>\n<li>A symbol rate (e.g. 27500 MS\/s).<\/li>\n<li>Polarisation (horizontal or vertical).<\/li>\n<li>Modulation and FEC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you manually add a satellite, this is the data you enter.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Transponders Matter to You<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>If one transponder dies, a whole group of channels goes with it.<\/li>\n<li>Channels on the same transponder pixelate together in rain.<\/li>\n<li>A &ldquo;blind scan&rdquo; finds all active transponders automatically.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How Many Transponders per Satellite?<\/h2>\n<p>A modern high-power satellite carries 40&ndash;80 transponders across the band. Each carries several HD channels. That is how one satellite delivers hundreds of stations.<\/p>\n<h2>When Broadcasters Move<\/h2>\n<p>A broadcaster may move from one transponder to another to gain capacity. Your old channel list still points at the old transponder &mdash; hence the need for a fresh scan.<\/p>\n<p>A transponder is the satellite equivalent of a frequency slot.
