Drill near the top of the tile, where tiles overlap — never in the exposed, drip edge. Better yet, lift a tile and fix your bracket to the rafter beneath, then bed the bracket in exterior mastic.

Step-by-Step Flashing

1. Plan the cable route first

Decide where the cable will enter the roof before you drill the fixing holes. Plan one cable hole, not several.

2. Lift the tiles, don't break them

Use a tile lifter to raise the course above where the bracket will sit. Slide the upstand of the flashing plate under the lifted tiles and let the bottom of the plate sit on top of the course below. This is how rainwater naturally sheds over the plate.

3. Seal every penetration

Use a neutral-cure exterior silicone around every bolt hole and around the cable entry. Do not use expanding foam — it wicks water. A proprietary rubber roof boot around the cable is far better than sealant alone.

4. Use stainless fixings

Galvanised or stainless steel bolts and wall plugs only. Mild steel fixings rust, and a rust stain on a white roof is the least of your problems — rust expands and cracks tiles.

Cable Entry Through the Roof

Drill the cable hole at a downward angle from outside to inside. Fit a rubber gland. Inside, leave a small drip loop so any water travelling on the cable drops before it reaches the wall plate.

Common Roof-Leak Culprits

Bolts fixed through the exposed (drip) edge of a tile.

No upstand under the flashing plate.

Using ordinary silicone instead of exterior mastic.

Forgetting that the cable itself can wick water — hence the drip loop.

Safety on the Roof

A roof is a working platform, not a garden. Wear soft shoes to avoid breaking tiles, use a ladder that extends at least a metre above the gutter, and never walk on slate or old clay tiles — they crack underfoot. If the roof is steep or high, hire a roofer for the flashing and do the dish alignment yourself.

A well-flashed roof dish outlasts the house paint. The rule is simple: water must always have a path over, not through, your fixings. Get that right and the dish will be dry for decades.

Roof mounting gives the clearest line of sight, but it also carries the biggest risk: a drilled hole in a roof almost always leaks eventually if it is done wrong.
