Hardware compatibility
Windows has the broadest driver support for DVB-S2 hardware. Most USB tuners and PCIe cards work out of the box or with a driver download from the manufacturer. Linux supports a good range of hardware through the LinuxTV project, but some newer or proprietary chipsets require extra effort.



Available software
Windows offers the widest selection, including DVBViewer, ProgDVB, Skylum, and many smaller applications. Linux alternatives include Kodi with Tvheadend or VDR backends, MythTV, and a few dedicated DVB applications. The feature depth is generally greater on Windows.
Stability and updates
Linux systems tend to remain stable through long running sessions and are less affected by automatic system updates. Windows stability depends on update timing and the quality of installed drivers. For a dedicated TV machine, Linux can be a reliable choice once configured.
Performance
Both platforms handle HD and 4K satellite streams adequately on modern hardware. Linux has a slight edge in reducing background overhead, which can matter on low-power or fanless systems.
Configuration effort
Windows requires less configuration for most satellite TV applications. Linux tools like Tvheadend offer more powerful backend capabilities but require more setup time and comfort with command-line configuration.
Recommendation
Use Windows if you want the widest application choice and easiest setup. Use Linux if you prefer an open-source workflow, already run a Linux media server, or need Tvheadend’s network tuner capabilities.
