What you need
- Raspberry Pi 5 with at least 4GB RAM
- 32GB or larger microSD card with Raspberry Pi OS Lite
- USB DVB-S2 tuner with Linux support
- Satellite dish with LNB and coax cable
- Power supply rated for the Pi and tuner
Install Raspberry Pi OS
Flash Raspberry Pi OS Lite to the microSD card using the Raspberry Pi Imager. Enable SSH and set a static IP during the initial setup. Connect the Pi to the network before proceeding.
Install TVHeadend
Update the package list and install TVHeadend from the official repository. Configure TVHeadend to start on boot and note the administration URL. Create an initial user account during the first run.
Configure the tuner
In the TVHeadend web interface, navigate to Configuration, DVB Inputs, and TV Adapters. Enable the USB tuner and select the satellite network type. Add a network with the correct satellite parameters and run a service scan.
Stream to other devices
TVHeadend streams via HTTP, HTSP, and SAT>IP protocols. Add the TVHeadend server as a source in Kodi, VLC, or any compatible client. Live TV and recordings are accessible from any device on the local network.
Performance tips
Use a powered USB hub if the tuner draws more than the available bus power. Mount the SD card as read-only for better reliability. Connect via Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi for stable streaming of HD channels.
