Infrared remote control options
Many satellite TV applications include built-in support for common USB IR receivers and remote controls. The Windows Media Center remote is widely compatible and inexpensive to find secondhand. Logitech Harmony remotes offer programmable buttons and activity-based control that can launch the TV application and switch inputs automatically.
Setting up a USB IR receiver
- Connect the USB IR receiver to the computer.
- Install any driver that came with the receiver.
- Open the satellite TV application and navigate to Settings, Remote, or Hotkeys.
- Map the basic buttons: channel up/down, volume, mute, and record.
Smartphone as remote
Several satellite TV applications offer companion smartphone apps that connect over the local network. These apps provide a full EPG, channel list, and recording controls without any additional hardware beyond the existing Wi-Fi network.
Custom button assignments
After the basic remote is working, assign frequently used functions to unused buttons. Examples include one-button access to the recording library, instant replay, and toggling the signal meter overlay.
Testing under real conditions
Test the remote setup from your actual viewing position. If the sofa is far from the computer, a longer-range IR blaster or a network-based smartphone app will work better than a basic USB receiver with limited range.
