Why integrate with a Smart TV
A dedicated satellite TV computer connected to a Smart TV gives you broadcast quality without subscription fees. Once configured, the experience can match or exceed a standard set-top box while offering the recording and scheduling capabilities of a PC.
Connection options
- HDMI: Connect the PC directly to the TV HDMI port for the simplest setup and full quality.
- Network streaming: Use DLNA, Plex, or the application’s built-in streaming server to cast content to Smart TV apps.
- CEC control: Use HDMI-CEC to control playback with the TV remote when the PC is connected via HDMI.
Streaming to Smart TV apps
Many satellite TV applications include a built-in HTTP streaming server. Start the server, note the local IP address and port, and open it in a browser or media player on the Smart TV. Smart TV apps like VLC, Kodi, or the TV manufacturer’s media browser can usually play the stream directly.
Optimizing for TV viewing
Switch the display resolution to match the TV’s native resolution, increase the font size in the application interface, and enable fullscreen by default. Use a wireless keyboard or the satellite TV software’s smartphone remote for channel switching and navigation.
Network bandwidth considerations
Streaming over the local network uses bandwidth, especially for HD content. Use a wired Ethernet connection between the PC and router for the most reliable playback. Wi-Fi can work for standard-definition streams but may stutter during HD playback on congested networks.
