Opening satellite streams in VLC
VLC can open DVB-S and DVB-S2 transport streams when the system has the correct BDA driver installed. Use Media, Open Capture Device, and select the DVB-S tuner. The available channels depend on the transponder list configured in the driver.
Signal analysis and stream info
VLC displays stream information including codec, bitrate, resolution, and audio format through the Tools, Codec Information menu. This is useful for verifying that a stream is being received correctly before relying on it for viewing.
Recording capability
VLC can record the active stream to a file using the Play, Convert, or Stream option. Select the destination file and codec before starting. VLC records in the chosen codec format, which is useful for transcoding but requires more configuration than dedicated TV software.
Limitations as TV software
VLC lacks electronic program guide support, scheduled recording, channel scanning, and DiSEqC configuration. It cannot manage multiple tuners or automate recording based on program names. For regular TV viewing with scheduling, a dedicated application is necessary.
When VLC is useful
VLC is a practical tool for testing a tuner installation, verifying stream quality, or capturing a specific program when dedicated software is unavailable. It is a complement to, not a replacement for, full-featured satellite TV software.
