Ghost Channels and Wrong EPG on Satellite
Two frustrating satellite quirks: channels that appear in the list but show nothing (“ghost channels”), and a programme guide that lists the wrong programmes. Both are usually channel-list issues, not dish issues.
What Are Ghost Channels?
A ghost channel is a list entry pointing at a transponder or channel that no longer exists. Selecting it gives “service not found” or a black screen. They accumulate after broadcasters move or close.
Why the EPG Goes Wrong
The electronic programme guide is broadcast alongside the channels. If your list is out of date, or the receiver has cached stale data, the guide shows old or wrong programmes. Some receivers mix up channels from different satellites with similar numbers.
Fix 1: Run a Fresh Scan
A new scan rebuilds the list from the current transponders, which removes dead entries.
Fix 2: Clear the EPG Cache
Most receivers have an option to clear EPG data. Clear it, leave the box on a channel for an hour, and the guide repopulates.
Fix 3: Delete Duplicate Channels
If the same channel appears twice with different numbers, delete the one that does not work. Channel editor apps make this fast.
Fix 4: Reboot and Wait
EPG data can take hours to download, especially after a reset. Leave the box on overnight with a decent signal.
Preventing Ghost Channels
Run a network scan rather than a blind scan. Blind scans pick up every frequency, including obsolete ones, and populate ghost entries.
When It Is a Different Problem
If the EPG is wrong on every channel and the receiver is sluggish, a firmware update or factory reset may be needed. If only one channel is wrong, the broadcaster is at fault.
Ghost channels and EPG glitches are digital clutter. A clean rescan and a little patience usually clears them.
