Satellite TV is one of those areas where DIY ranges from trivial to dangerous. Knowing which side of the line you are on saves money and keeps you safe.
DIY-Friendly Problems
- Rebooting the receiver.
- Running a fresh channel scan.
- Reseating F-connectors at the receiver end.
- Checking batteries in the remote.
- Swapping HDMI cables.
- Factory resetting the receiver.
- Updating firmware.
These are all done safely at ground level, on the TV side of the system.
DIY Possible, Care Needed
- Re-peaking a low wall-mounted dish.
- Replacing an LNB on an existing mount.
- Adding a DiSEqC switch.
- Running new cable inside the house.
These need a short ladder and a signal meter, but are learnable.
Call a Professional
- Any work on a roof, chimney or above first-floor height.
- Setting up a new motorised DiSEqC polar mount.
- Fixing a bent pole or broken bracket.
- Installing a multi-room / multiswitch system.
- Anything involving earthing or lightning protection.
- If you do not have a head for heights.
The Cost Calculation
A service call costs money. But a fall from a roof costs far more. If the dangerous part is the height, pay for the height and keep the safe parts for yourself.
