Satellite Receiver Not Responding to Remote

You press buttons on the remote and nothing happens — but the box itself is still playing. Before you buy a new remote, work through the simple causes.

Step 1: Check the Obvious

  • Are the remote batteries fresh and in the right way round?
  • Is there an obstacle between the remote and the box?
  • Does the front of the receiver have a bright LED or sunlight shining on it?

Step 2: Check the Remote Emitter

Point the remote at a phone camera and press a button. You should see a purple/white flash on the camera screen. If no flash, the remote is dead — new batteries, then a new remote.

Step 3: Check the Receiver Sensor

If the remote flashes but the box ignores it, the receiver's IR sensor is blocked or faulty. Some receivers support an external IR receiver extension.

Step 4: Stuck Button

A jammed button puts the remote in a weird state. Take the batteries out, press every button once to clear it, then reinsert.

Step 5: Is It Really the Remote?

Try the physical buttons on the receiver itself. If they work, the remote is the issue. If they do not, the box has locked up — reboot it.

Step 6: Reboot the Receiver

A locked-up box ignores everything. Pull the power for 30 seconds and restart.

Universal Remotes

If you have a universal remote, re-pair it with the receiver using the manufacturer's code.

When to Buy a Replacement

If the remote emits no IR flash with new batteries, it is dead. Most brands sell replacement remotes, or a cheap universal one will work for basic control.

A dead remote is usually batteries or an IR emitter — not the satellite system. Check the phone-camera trick first; it diagnoses it in ten seconds.
