HDMI Problems Between Satellite Receiver and TV
The dish is fine, the signal is locked, but the TV shows no picture through HDMI. A surprising number of “satellite faults” are actually HDMI problems between the receiver and the television.
Symptom 1: No Picture at All
- Check the TV is on the right HDMI input.
- Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable.
- Try a different HDMI port on the TV.
- Try a different HDMI cable.
Symptom 2: Black Screen Then Recovers
HDMI handshaking can fail. Unplug both ends, wait a minute, and reconnect. Some receivers need the TV switched on before the receiver.
Symptom 3: Sparkles, Green Flecks or Grain
A marginal HDMI cable causes digital sparkles. Swap it — this is very common on long HDMI runs.
Symptom 4: No Sound
- Check the receiver's audio output is set to HDMI.
- Some TVs need ARC/eARC enabled in their menus.
- Try a different HDMI port — not all ports carry audio.
Symptom 5: Wrong Resolution
If the TV says “format not supported”, the receiver is outputting a resolution the TV does not like. Reboot the receiver with the cable disconnected, set 1080p50, then reconnect.
Symptom 6: HDMI-CEC Weirdness
HDMI-CEC (one-device-control) can make the TV and receiver fight. Turn off CEC on both and see if the problem goes away.

- Use a certified HDMI 2.0 or better cable for 4K.
- Keep cables under 5 m for reliable handshaking.
- Avoid cheap no-name cables — they fail first.
Test Before Blaming the Dish
If you can see the receiver's menu on screen, the dish is not the problem. The issue is between the box and the TV. Swap cables and ports first — it saves a ladder climb.
HDMI problems look like satellite faults but live entirely in the living room. Rule them out before going outside.
