Error Codes on Satellite Receivers: What They Mean

An error code on your satellite screen looks alarming, but most codes are cryptic versions of problems you can already diagnose. Here are the ones you are most likely to see, and what to do.

“No Signal” / “No Satellite Signal Being Received”

The receiver is not getting a usable carrier. Check the LNB cable, the dish alignment, and whether the LNB power is switched on.

“Signal Quality Too Low” / “Bad Signal”

The dish is pointed near the satellite but not locked. Re-peak the dish, or check for obstructions.

“Tuning Failed” / “Service Not Found”

The channel you selected is no longer on that transponder. Run a fresh scan.

“Scrambled” / “Bad or Encrypted Channel”

The channel is encrypted and your card/subscription is not valid. This is not a dish fault.

“Short Circuit on Tuner” / “LNB Short”

The receiver has detected a short on the cable. Disconnect the LNB cable; if the message goes away, find and fix the short.

“EPG Not Available”

The programme guide data has not downloaded yet. Usually fixes itself after a few hours, or after a reboot.

“Loading…” / Stuck on Boot Logo

Software corruption. Power off, wait, restart; if it persists, reinstall firmware.

“No Card Found” / “Insert Card”

For pay-TV cards: the smart card is not seated. Remove and reinsert it, chip down, in the right direction.

General Rule

If the error mentions signal, look outside. If it mentions the channel, rescan. If it mentions a card or encryption, the dish is fine. If it appears on boot, suspect software.

Error codes are not random — they map to a small number of root causes. Read the words, not the numbers, and half the problem solves itself.
