Satellite Receiver Rebooting: Power and Signal Issues
A satellite receiver that keeps rebooting — powering up, showing the boot logo, and restarting again — is one of the most worrying faults. Usually it is a power issue, not a signal issue. Here is how to diagnose it.
Why Receivers Reboot Themselves
Receivers reboot when their supply voltage dips below the minimum needed to run the processor. That can come from a faulty power supply, a power strip, or a short on the LNB cable.
Cause 1: Failing Internal Power Supply
Electrolytic capacitors inside the receiver dry out over years. The supply can no longer deliver stable voltage, and the box reboots randomly. Symptom: random reboots, worse when warm.
Cause 2: Short on the LNB Cable
If the coax has a short (braid touching centre pin), the receiver's LNB protection kicks in and the box may restart. Disconnect the LNB cable — if the receiver now stays on, the cable or LNB is shorted.
Cause 3: Overheating
A receiver in a closed cabinet overheats and shuts down to protect itself. Improve ventilation.
Cause 4: Software Corruption
A firmware update interrupted by a power cut can leave the box in a boot loop. A forced firmware reinstall usually fixes it.
Cause 5: Faulty Remote or Button
A stuck power button on the receiver or remote can make the box look like it is rebooting. Unplug the remote batteries and watch.
Diagnosis Steps
- Disconnect the LNB cable — does it stay on?
- Feel the receiver — is it hot?
- Try a different power socket.
- Remove the remote batteries.
Fixes
- Replace the internal capacitors (a repair shop can do this cheaply).
- Repair the shorted LNB cable.
- Give the box ventilation.
- Reinstall firmware.
When to Replace
If the power supply board is beyond cheap repair, a new entry-level receiver often costs less than the repair. But check the cable and power first — many “dead” receivers are just shorted LNB lines.
A rebooting receiver is usually telling you about its power, not its picture. Check the cable and the supply before you assume the box is dead.
