Satellite TV Cutting Out in Wind or Rain
If your satellite picture cuts out whenever the weather turns, your installation has thin signal margin. It is fixable, but you need to understand which weather triggers it.
When Wind Causes Cut-Outs
Wind moving the dish a fraction of a millimetre is enough to drop a marginal signal. Causes:
- Loose dish bolts or a flexing pole.
- A large dish on a small bracket.
- A dish that was barely peaked to begin with.
When Rain Causes Cut-Outs
Rain absorbs the signal. You need more dish size or a better LNB to ride through showers.
When Both Happen
If your picture fails in any bad weather, your signal margin is fundamentally too small. No amount of tweaking will fully fix it — you need to add gain.
Fixes for Wind Dropouts
- Climb up and check every bolt on the dish and bracket.
- Check the pole is rigid — a thin pole flexes.
- Re-peak the dish carefully.
- Upgrade to a sturdier bracket if the dish is large.
Fixes for Rain Dropouts
- Step up to a larger dish.
- Fit a low-noise LNB.
- Clear obstructions that are worse when wet.
Test After Repairs
Watch the signal quality bar during the next windy, wet spell. If it holds above 70%, you have enough margin. If it still touches zero, go bigger.
Weather-induced dropouts are the receiver telling you the install is marginal. Bolts and alignment fix the wind; dish size fixes the rain.
