A smartphone satellite finder app replaces a separate signal meter for many jobs. It shows you where the satellite is in the sky — and, on some phones, overlays it on the camera view. Here is what to expect.
What the Apps Do
Using GPS and the phone's compass, the app tells you the azimuth, elevation and LNB skew for your chosen satellite. Many show an augmented-reality overlay: point the phone at the sky and see where the satellite will be.
What They Do Not Do
They cannot measure the actual signal from your dish. For that you still need a separate satellite meter or the receiver's own signal screen. Apps help you aim; they do not tell you when you have peaked.
Recommended Workflow
- Use the app to find the approximate satellite direction and check for obstructions.
- Mount the dish roughly at the angle the app suggests.
- Use the receiver's signal meter to peak precisely.
Calibrate the Compass
Phone compons drift. Calibrate by waving the phone in a figure-eight before you rely on the direction. A wrong compass reading sends the dish the wrong way.
AR Mode Handy Tips
AR overlay works best outdoors in daylight. On a bright sunny day the camera screen can be hard to see. Use it to check for trees and buildings, not for fine aiming.

Free apps cover the basics. Paid apps add more satellites, offline maps and better AR. For a one-off install, a free app plus the receiver screen is enough.
