Satellite Dish Installation Safety: Working at Height on Ladders

Satellite installation is one of those jobs that looks simple until someone falls off a ladder. Most accidents happen in the last five minutes, when the installer is tired and the dish is almost aligned. Treat the height, not the alignment, as the dangerous part.

The Ladder Rules

  • Use a ladder rated for your weight plus tools — not the one from the garage corner.
  • Set it at the correct angle: one in four (lean 1 metre back for every 4 metres up).
  • Extend it at least 1 metre above the gutter so you have something to hold onto when stepping off.
  • Never stand on the top two rungs.
  • Have someone foot the ladder, even for a five-minute job.

Personal Safety Gear

Gloves protect your hands from sharp dish edges and hot metal. Safety glasses stop a dropped bolt from landing in your eye. Sturdy shoes with grip matter more than you think — ladders are slippery after rain.

Electrical and Weather Risks

Never install a dish near overhead power lines. Keep at least 3 metres clear. Stop work at the first sign of thunder — a large metal dish on a pole is an excellent lightning conductor. Never work in high wind: even a 60 cm dish acts as a sail.

Tool Safety

Carry tools in a tool belt, not in your hands, when climbing. A spanner dropped from a roof can kill. Tie small tools to your wrist if you are working at height.

When to Stop and Call a Pro

If the job needs you on a pitched roof, on a chimney, or more than one floor up, stop. The cost of a professional install is trivial compared with a hospital trip. Many installers will happily let you hold the ladder and learn — that is the safe way to start.

First-Aid After the Job

Wash any cuts — dish metal and bracket galvanising are filthy. Put antiseptic on. A tetanus booster every ten years is sensible if you do this often.

Satellite installation is not worth an injury. The dish will wait; your body will not mend itself as quickly as a misaligned LNB. Stay safe on the ladder, and finish the job another day if conditions are bad.
