Setting the Time, EPG and Parental Controls on Satellite TV
Beyond tuning channels, your receiver has a handful of everyday settings that make a big difference. Time, the programme guide and parental controls are worth ten minutes of setup.
Time and Timezone
Set your correct timezone in the receiver menu. The time comes from the broadcast stream; with the wrong timezone, recordings and EPG timestamps will be off by hours.
EPG: Electronic Programme Guide
The EPG shows what is on now and next. Leave the receiver on a popular channel for an hour or two after setup — the EPG data downloads over the air. Some receivers support a full 7-day EPG plugin.
If the EPG Is Wrong
- Check the timezone.
- Reboot and leave the box on a channel.
- Clear EPG data and let it repopulate.
Parental Controls
Most receivers let you lock channels behind a PIN. Set a PIN you will remember but the children will not. Lock adult and inappropriate channels.
Timer and Recording
Set up timers from the EPG — highlight a programme and press record. Make sure the receiver is on the right satellite and channel for the timer to work.
Standby Behaviour
Decide whether the receiver should fully power down or stay in a low-power standby. If you use timers, leave it in standby so recordings still fire.
Auto Standby
Enable auto-standby after a few hours to save power — but not so aggressively that timers fail.
These everyday settings take minutes but pay off every time you watch. Set the timezone first — it fixes most EPG complaints.
